Watch Water Resistance

Watch water resistance: understanding the ratings

Water resistance protects your watch against water, humidity, and dust. It is generally expressed in ATM (atmospheres), bars, or meters, three units that correspond to the same level of water resistance.

Contrary to popular belief, a rating of 30 meters or 50 meters does not necessarily mean that the watch can be used at that depth. These values are determined during laboratory tests and are primarily used to define the recommended uses.

Each water resistance level corresponds to specific activities, ranging from simple hand washing to scuba diving.

The different water resistance levels

No indication

A watch with no water resistance rating should not be considered water-resistant. Although it may withstand slight humidity in certain situations, it is generally not designed to be regularly exposed to water. It is best to avoid any contact with rain, hand washing, or humid environments in order to preserve its proper functioning.

3 ATM / 30 meters water resistance

A water resistance rating of 3 ATM, also indicated as 30 meters, provides protection against splashes and occasional contact with water. This level of water resistance is perfectly suitable for everyday use, such as hand washing or exposure to rain. On the other hand, it is not intended for aquatic activities such as swimming or showering.

5 ATM / 50 meters water resistance

With a water resistance rating of 5 ATM or 50 meters, the watch benefits from enhanced protection against water and everyday humidity. It offers greater security during routine activities and frequent contact with water. Although it is more resistant than a 30-meter model, it is generally not designed for prolonged aquatic activities or diving.

10 ATM / 100 meters water resistance

A watch water-resistant to 10 ATM, or 100 meters, is suitable for swimming and most recreational water activities. It often represents an excellent compromise between elegance, versatility, and water resistance. This level of water resistance is particularly appreciated by active people who want to wear their watch both every day and at the pool or on vacation.

20 ATM / 200 meters water resistance

A water resistance rating of 20 ATM or 200 meters makes it possible to confidently take on more demanding water activities. This level of protection is frequently used on sports and diving watches. It is suitable for users who regularly spend time in the water and are looking for a watch capable of accompanying their aquatic activities without compromise.

30 ATM / 300 meters and more water resistance

Watches offering 30 ATM water resistance, or 300 meters and more, are designed to operate in particularly demanding environments. They are often associated with the world of scuba diving and intense water activities. Beyond the displayed figure, these models generally benefit from a reinforced design intended to ensure their reliability in extreme conditions.

Which water resistance should you choose?

Each water resistance level meets different needs. The right choice depends first and foremost on your lifestyle and the activities you do.

The Classic

3 ATM / 30 m

For those looking for a watch intended for everyday use, capable of withstanding rain, splashes, and hand washing.

The Versatile

5 ATM / 50 m

For users seeking enhanced protection against water in daily life, while keeping an elegant and versatile watch.

The Swimmer

10 ATM / 100 m

For those who want to wear their watch at the pool, go swimming, or enjoy their vacation without worrying about frequent contact with water.

The Diver

30 ATM / 300 m and more

For scuba diving enthusiasts looking for a watch designed to perform in the most demanding aquatic environments.

Common misconceptions about watch water resistance

Watch water resistance is often misunderstood. Between ratings in meters, real-world uses, and usage conditions, certain beliefs persist. Here are the most common mistakes and the explanations you need to know to preserve your watch
Misconception

Frequently asked questions about water resistance

Best practices

Have the water resistance checked regularly

Seals naturally age and can lose their effectiveness over time.

Avoid temperature changes

Saunas, hot baths, and jacuzzis can damage the seals.

Do not operate the crown underwater

Unless the manufacturer states otherwise, this can allow water to enter the case.
